Beatrix “Betty” McCleary Hamburg, Vassar ‘44, the first African-American student to gain admission to Vassar since Anita Hemmings’ expulsion in 1897. A psychiatrist specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry, Hamburg was also the first black woman to graduate from Yale Medical School.

What an awesome lady! Kind of curious what this Anita Hemmings thing is. Sounds scandalous.

edit: Apparently she was a young lady who passed as white. Trying not to feel smug about the fact that Mount Holyoke had an African-American graduate listed in school records as black in 1883 (and she lived on campus with the white girls, too). 1944 is wicked late, Vassar.
